PROBLEMS THAT MAY ARISE FROM INEFFICIENT POSTURAL ORGANISATION
Body position can alter the mechanical conditions in which the rib cage, spine, respiratory muscles and diaphragm operate.
A markedly flexed or compressed position does not simply “switch off” the diaphragm, but it may change thoracic mobility and the way breathing is coordinated with phonation.
In singing, where precise regulation of expiratory airflow and pressure is often required, changes in body organisation may influence how efficiently the respiratory system responds to the demands of a phrase.
Posture should therefore not be viewed as a rigid position that allows us to “breathe correctly”, but as part of a dynamic system that needs enough mobility and adaptability to respond to different vocal demands.
Increased Muscular Tension
When the body is not efficiently organised for a task, certain muscle groups may perform additional work to maintain stability or movement.
Changes in head and neck position, elevated shoulders or excessive rigidity through the upper body may be accompanied by increased muscular activity around the neck, jaw and extrinsic laryngeal region.
This is particularly relevant to voice because the larynx does not function independently from the rest of the body. It is located within the cervical region and is mechanically connected to surrounding muscular and skeletal structures.
When unnecessary muscular compensation becomes part of a vocal strategy, voice production may feel less flexible, less efficient or more effortful.
The aim is not complete muscular relaxation. Voice requires muscular activity. What matters is whether that activity is appropriate for the task.
Changes in Resonance and Vocal Projection
Head and neck position can also influence the configuration of the vocal tract.
Changes in the position of the jaw, tongue, larynx and pharyngeal structures can alter the shape of the acoustic spaces through which sound travels. This may influence vocal tract resonances and, consequently, aspects of the sound perceived by the listener.
This does not mean that an upright posture automatically creates “better resonance” or greater projection.
Rather, the body needs enough freedom to allow the vocal tract to change shape according to the sound, pitch, vowel and vocal quality being produced.
Articulation Difficulties
The position and movement of the head and neck are functionally related to structures involved in articulation, particularly the jaw and tongue.
When excessive muscular activity or restricted movement develops in these areas, articulatory movements may require more effort or feel less free.
For singers and professional voice users, this may be experienced as increased jaw or tongue tension, reduced ease of pronunciation or difficulty maintaining clear articulation during demanding vocal tasks.
Once again, the goal is not to impose a fixed position on these structures, but to maintain enough mobility and coordination for them to adapt efficiently.
Vocal Fatigue and Increased Effort
The more unnecessary muscular activity the body uses to accomplish a task, the greater the overall energetic cost may become.
A useful concept here is biological economy: an efficiently organised system responds to the demands placed upon it with the lowest necessary energetic cost — in other words, with as little unnecessary effort as possible. (BVS - BodyVoice Synthesis)
Applied to voice, this does not mean that singing should feel effortless because the muscles are doing nothing.
Instead, we want the appropriate amount of muscular activity, in the appropriate place, at the appropriate time.
If the body repeatedly relies on compensatory strategies or unnecessary muscular effort, speaking or singing may begin to feel more demanding and vocal fatigue may develop more quickly.
